Community Tables Program to Launch in Brandon

Brandon MB: In a 2017 survey on a proposed Brandon Food Council, 50% of respondents identified Food Skills and Education as a high priority issue. Food Matters Manitoba’s Community Tables Training directly addresses that issue, and it is coming to Brandon for the first time this summer.

The 15 hour training program, designed to equip staff and volunteers at community organizations with the skills to serve more nourishing food to their clients, will be running at the Brandon Friendship Centre on July 17th and 18th. The program has been running in Winnipeg for the past four years, with staff from over 45 different organizations having taken part.

“It really changed how we thought about cooking” says Danene Goulet, of the Lord Selkirk Park Family Resource Centre. “Instead of going for the standard easy stuff […] I would purposely do some research and find healthier options that fit within our budget and are often easier to make too!”

Food Matters Manitoba developed the training program in response to a need expressed by organizations in Winnipeg’s North End, where many residents face high levels of food insecurity. Topics covered by the program range from basic nutrition and label reading, to cooking for clients with diabetes and working with common, affordable foods. Along with classroom learning, the program includes lot of hands on activities and peer to peer learning, as well as time in the kitchen putting new knowledge into practice.

“These organizations are often feeding 25 or more folks a day, all while facing tiny food budgets, ill-equipped kitchens and limited time” says Anna Levin, Program Coordinator at Food Matters Manitoba. “Community Tables was designed to help build the skills and knowledge of the folks who are preparing that food, so that they can do the best for their clients with the resources they have access to – whether it’s a hot plate or a state of the art kitchen, donated dry goods, or a bountiful food budget.”

“We are so excited to be bringing this program to Brandon for the very first time” says Olivia Boyce, Brandon Food Policy Coordinator with Food Matters Manitoba. “There are so many great community organizations here who are already having such an impact on community food security, and the program is a great opportunity to support that work.”
