Keeping Tabs on Food Security One Story at a Time

During my time as a Research Intern at Food Matters Manitoba, I have had the pleasure of putting together monthly media scans for internal circulation. Each media scan involved multiple hours spent searching for the latest and greatest news in food security. I searched through federal and national news, provincial and municipal news, and other local Canadian stories and noteworthy research. As a recent Human Nutritional Sciences graduate with an interest in community nutrition, I was thrilled to stay up to date on the latest food security news.

One of my favourite stories from the past three months includes a pay-what-you-can grocery store. Not a single price tag can be found in the new pay-what-you-can Feed it Forward store in the Junction neighbourhood of Toronto. The store opened in June and is the first of its kind in Canada. Shoppers have the opportunity to take what they need and pay what they can, even if that means not being able to pay at all. Typical grocery store staples can be found on the shelves such as fresh produce, bread, meat and other items such as sugar and flour.

This social enterprise is making good food more affordable and reducing social stigma, as anyone can stop into shop, regardless of income.  Feed it Forward founder, Chef Jagger Gordon, hopes to see the store alleviate food insecurity and poverty within the community. With Feed it Forward as a model of what a grocery store can be, it may only be a matter of time before we notice more pay-what-you-can options open up across Canada.
