Winnipeg Food Council to develop a food strategy

WFC logoThe Winnipeg Food Council met on June 5th to get moving on its annual work plan. Though ambitious, many of the objectives outlined in the plan are already underway.

City planners are currently drafting a report that will suggest ways – including possible by-law changes – to expand small-scale commercial agriculture within city limits. Possible zoning changes could make it possible for urban farmers to grow produce on city-owned, private and vacant lots currently not approved for agricultural use, and then sell that produce through farmers markets or other established retail outlets.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is compiling a report of best practices for municipal community garden programs, in the hopes that the city will adopt a community gardening strategy some time before the next gardening season. Access to water has been a key concern for community gardeners.

The WFC, including representatives from various food systems sectors, will also tackle ways to support community initiatives, review City of Winnipeg Food procurement and service standards, and assess the impact of community food programs throughout Winnipeg.

As a projected high point for the year to come, the Winnipeg Food Council aims to develop an overarching Winnipeg Food Strategy. Now that the work is underway, WFC members are looking forward to reviewing and prioritizing a large number of recommendations made in the lead up the WFC’s formation.
