Traditional harvester and FMM’s Northern partner, Drayden Jobb, recounts his personal experience attending a Sundance in Winnipeg over the past summer.

The journey to the Sundance gathering in Winnipeg began the moment I clocked out of work, a mix of excitement and anticipation bubbling within me. I had packed my bags the night before, ensuring that all my essentials were ready for the adventure ahead.

As I hopped into my car, the fading sunlight painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, a beautiful backdrop for the road trip that lay ahead. The rhythmic hum of the engine accompanied my thoughts, and I couldn’t help but reflect on the significance of this gathering.

It felt like a pilgrimage, a chance to reconnect with my heritage and meet fellow seekers of culture and tradition.

The drive was filled with moments of solitude and contemplation, punctuated by the occasional upbeat song on the radio that made me sing along.

As I crossed northern lines into the south I watched the landscape transform, the anticipation grew stronger. Eventually, the bright lights of Winnipeg welcomed me, and I could feel the vibrant energy of the city pulsing around me.

Finding my way to the venue, I parked and took a moment to breathe in the crisp air, letting it fuel my excitement for what lay ahead. Stepping out of the car, I felt a sense of belonging wash over me, knowing that this journey was just the first step in experiencing something truly special at the Sundance gathering.

Attending my first Sundance gathering in the south was a remarkable journey into the heart of our culture and traditions. As I stepped into the vibrant atmosphere, I was immediately surrounded by a diverse group of individuals, each with their own stories and experiences to share. 

The warmth of the community was palpable, as laughter and conversation flowed freely among old friends and new acquaintances alike. It was inspiring to see the dedication and effort that went into organizing the event, from the intricate decorations that reflected our heritage to the carefully curated program celebrating our traditions. 

Throughout the gathering, I found myself immersed in a wealth of knowledge and learning opportunities. Workshops and discussions offered insights into our history, arts, and practices – allowing me to appreciate the richness of our culture in a deeper way. 

I was particularly moved by the stories shared by elders, who spoke passionately about the importance of preserving our traditions for future generations. This experience not only strengthened my connection to my roots but also ignited a desire to contribute to the ongoing revival of our cultural practices. 

Leaving the gathering, I felt a renewed sense of pride and responsibility to carry our traditions forward, eager to apply what I had learned and share it with others.
